The annual lantern ceremony on Little Lake is being held on Sunday in memory of the bombing of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The bombing of Hiroshima, Japan took place on Aug. 6, 1945. Nagasaki was bombed on Aug. 9.
For years, Peterborough Ploughshares has remembered the bombings with a colourful lantern ceremony. This year that ceremony takes place on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the T-wharf on Little Lake.
The lanterns will be launched on the lake at dusk.
Earlier in the day, there are other gatherings: There will be a potluck picnic at Fleming Park at 1 p.m. and then people will be invited to walk to the Peace Pole in Millennium Park for a circle dance, ending around 3:30 p.m.
A release from the Peterborough Peace Council, which is organizing the event, states that there's extra reason to gather this year.
People will be celebrating the fact that after 30 years of negotiations, the United Nations approved the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on July 7.
In total, 122 nations have signed on. Although none are nuclear nations, the release points out that there now exists a process for the dismantling of the global nuclear arsenal.
